Ayurveda is a traditional medicine system of India. It is made up of two Sanskrit words, ayus meaning “longevity” and veda meaning “relating to knowledge”. The history of Ayurveda streches back to the Vedic period of India. Then over the centuries, practitioners developed procedures for treating various ailments. Ayurveda basically adopted the science of The Five Elements namely, Prithvi (Earth), Jal (Water), Agni (Fire), Vayu (Air) and Akasha (Sky). These components compose the Universe and also the human body. Ayurveda focuses on three elemental energies and maintaining their balance, Vata (air & space – “wind”), Pitta (fire & water – “bile”) and Kapha (water & earth – “phlegm”). The Susruta Samhita and the Charaka Samhita are great encyclopedias of medicine. The origins of Ayurveda can be traced back to more than 5000 years.
