INDIAN WEDDING – ORIYA WEDDINGS

Oriya Weddings are the ones associated with the state of Orissa. Oriya marriages are simple and mostly follow the traditional Hindu marriage rituals. One of the most interesting facts about an Oriya Wedding is that the groom’s mother does not take part in the wedding. The first wedding ritual is “Jayee Anukolo”, which involves distribution of invitation cards, then turmeric paste is apllied to both bride and the groom. The next ritual is “Diya Mangula Puja”, wherein the bride worships at Devi’s temple and offers bride’s bangles, sari, toe rings and sindoor. Next is “Barajatri” where the groom arrives at the venue with a procession, then the bride takes a bath called as the “Baadua Pani Gadhua” custom. Most of the ceremonies are the same as any typical Hindu Wedding.

Then the Kanyadaan ritual is performed, in which the father of the bride gives away his daughter to the groom blessing them both with loads of love and care. Then in the “Haatha Ghanti” custom is performed in which the couple takes 7 rounds around the fire. All the rituals are performed amidst of several holy shlokas and mantras.

After the Wedding ceremony the bride is farewelled to her new home by her entire family, showering blessings on both of them. When the new bride enters her marital home, the ceremony is known as “Grihpravesh”. This is followed by the “Astha Mangala” custom, wherein the newly weds visit the bride’s home.
