A Gujarati Wedding is usually very vibrant and live. Gujarati people love celebrations and dance. A typical Gujarati marriage begins with the Engagement “Sagai”. Sagai marks the formal approval of the marriage by both the families and is followed by various other interesting traditional customs. Other ceremonies performed before the wedding are Pithi, Mehndi and Mandap Muharat. A Grihshanti Puja is also performed for the peace and wellbeing in home. All the members of both the families enjoy “Garba” dance a day before the wedding, thus making the grand ambience more enthusiastic and exciting.
Like the traditional ritualistic pattern of any Indian Wedding, a Gujarati wedding also follows the Jaimala, Varmala, Kanya Daan and Mangal Phera ceremonies, and also, exclusive Gujarati rituals like Madhuparka, Hastamilaap, Saubhagyavati Bhava and Chero Pakaryo. And after the wedding, “Vidai” (where all the family members and friends of the bride’s family bid her good bye), “Ghar Nu Laxmi” (welcome ceremony of the bride at groom’s home) and ‘Aeki Beki’, an interesting game to find out who will rule the household are some interesting ceremonies of a Gujarati Ceremony.
