Savitri Jindal is an Indian steel baroness, the wealthiest woman in India and the world’s 44th richest person. She is the non-executive chairperson of Jindal Steel and Power and JSW Steel, and member of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, (Legislative Assembly) MLA. She also served as a Minister of Power in the Government of Haryana until 2010. She became the chairperson after her husband, O.P. Jindal, died in a helicopter crash in 2005.
She chairs $12 billion (revenues) O.P. Jindal Group, steel and power conglomerate named after her late husband Om Prakash Jindal who died in a helicopter crash five years ago. Sons Prithviraj, Sajjan, Ratan and Naveen manage operations. Sajjan’s JSW Energy listed in January, cashing in on energy-starved India’s demand for power. He sold just under 15% in JSW Steel to Japanese steelmaker JFE Holdings for $1.2 billion. Jindal Steel & Power run by youngest sibling Naveen who is a member of parliament, bought Oman’s Shadeed Iron & Steel for $465 million in May. Its upcoming power project in eastern India delayed as ministry of environment reviews approvals.
She is noted for being the world’s 4th richest mother.
