The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai (Bombay), set up by an Act of Parliament, was established in 1958, at Powai, a northern suburb of Mumbai. Today the Institute is recognised as one of the centres of academic excellence in the country. Over the years, there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities, and a parallel improvement in facilities and infrastructure, to keep it on par with the best institutions in the world. Institutes in positions of excellence grow with time. The ideas and ideals on which such institutes are built evolve and change with national aspirations, national perspectives, and trends worldwide. IIT Bombay, too, is one such institution.
The IIT Bombay campus is located at Powai, a suburb in north western Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes. The campus is divided into clusters of buildings. The academic area chiefly comprises the Main Building, various Departmental annexures and auditoria.The academic system assigns a grade index to students, with 10.0 being the maximum possible index that can be achieved. Also, there are rules requiring a compulsory 80% attendance in classroom courses.Apart from cultural and technological activities, the campus is also involved in business activities with bodies like The Entrepreneurship Cell, which support the growth of start ups across the globe.
